Overview

A sports tipping game that gives fans a reason to watch the game at their local pub instead of at home.

The problem. Fans were watching sport at home instead of at the pub. Venues were losing visitors and bar sales.

What I did. Co-led the design of a tipping app that only works inside partner venues, and a 42-inch wall kiosk, using one shared design system.

The outcome. Deployed across 600+ venues, with 50K+ sign-ups during the pilot and a 94% tip completion rate.

01

Problem & goals

Pubs were losing customers to watching sport at home.

Why pubs needed help

Watching sport at home had become easier and cheaper. Pubs across Australia saw fewer visitors, shorter visits and lower bar sales.

The goal for Full House Venues (part of Entain)

  • Give casual fans a reason to bring friends to a local venue
  • Make it a weekly habit through the AFL and NRL seasons
The problem

Fewer visitors

Venues couldn't compete with the comfort of home and needed a reason to bring people in.

The idea

Check in at the venue

Tips can only be entered while checked in at a partner venue, so every game is a real, measurable visit.

The result

A weekly habit

Group competitions for AFL, NRL, soccer and racing turned casual fans into regulars.

02

Audience

Two audiences: venue operators and sports fans.

Balancing two needs

  • Venue operators wanted longer visits and more sales
  • Fans wanted a tipping game that was quick and easy

Balancing both set how much went on each screen and kept every task to as few steps as possible.

The challenge

Making a location rule feel like a reward.

A rule that could push people away

Tips only work inside partner venues. If someone opened the app at home and saw a "not available here" error, they would likely delete it. The design had to make this rule feel natural.

Inside a venue, the app is for playing. Outside, it shows nearby venues screening the game.

State A · Inside the pub

Easy play in the venue

A quick location check switches the app to that venue. Matchups, standings and offers are easy to reach with one thumb.

State B · At home

Finding a venue

Outside a venue, the app lists nearby partner venues showing the big games, and the offers available when you check in.

Design scope

One design system for a phone and a wall kiosk.

One library, two screen sizes

One set of Figma components worked across both screens, from a phone in your hand to a kiosk on a busy pub wall.

Role & process

My role, from pub visits to developer handoff.

Co-leading the design

I co-led design with Yuri Leleko across the app and the kiosk, covering research, visual design, the component library, user testing and developer specs.

  1. Discovery & journey mapping

Visited pubs to compare how people browse games at home with how they enter tips in a busy bar.

  2. Wireframes & contrast tests

Tested layouts on phones and kiosk concepts, adjusting button sizes until they were readable in bright pub lighting.

  3. UI system & feedback

A dark theme on our design system, with clear selected states and a confirmation animation when you submit.

  4. Usability testing & onboarding

Testing showed people hesitated at the location prompt. I redesigned it to explain the nearby rewards first, which noticeably increased acceptance.

Venue terminal

A kiosk designed for a busy pub.

Two modes on the wall

The wall kiosk has two modes:

  • When not in use: a rolling leaderboard with live highlights, standings and promotions
  • When touched: a tipping sheet where players can enter their picks in under 45 seconds

In-venue games

In-venue games that bring people back.

Reasons to visit again

Two games only work inside a venue: Quizup, a daily sports quiz, and Lucky Win, a daily collectable card game.

Lucky Win

  • Each visit gives you a random team card from one of five leagues: AFL, NRL, NBA, NFL and EPL
  • Players collect full sets, which brings them back
  • I designed and art-directed all 135 cards in one consistent style
  • Each mascot started as an AI image, which I finished in Photoshop: lighting, card frame and sport branding
  • AFL, NRL, NBA and NFL logos are blurred because we didn't hold those licences. EPL cards show the Premier League logo.

Design system

The design system behind both screens.

One brand on every screen

A fixed set of colours, gradients and a bold italic headline font, shared by the app and the kiosk so the brand looks the same on a 6-inch phone and a 42-inch screen.

Reflections

What I learned.

A limit can become a feature

Limiting play to venues looked like a risk. Making check-in a reward, with weekly prizes, made it the main reason people came back.

Design for where people are

Designing for a phone and a wall screen showed that responsive design means adapting to the setting, not just stretching layouts.
